My local supermarket now carries peanut butter, something almost impossible to find here in Madrid -- except at Taste of America, the specialty food store near the U.S. embassy.

Genuine American peanut butter, though it's a brand you may have never heard of in the United States, Capitán Maní. (Maní is a Latin American word for peanut.)

You can no doubt share my thrill at seeing the star-spangled label with Captain Peanut dressed up as a baseball player -- what could be more American than that? The label says "USA" a total of seven times in different places, including in the assurance that it is real imported peanut butter from the USA. At least they love us for something.

It's certified Kosher, by the way -- that's one thing that distinguishes American products from Spanish products. Proof that it is indeed imported.

For the modest price of 3.30 euros/US$4.25 for 340 grams/12 ounces.

Time for a sandwich.

I'll check my local grocery, but I think your peanut butter is not much more expensive than at my grocery store. I'll post you some comparison prices. I hate my grocery store right now because I think they are deliberately gouging the price on certain items. Like my organic milk for Miss E. At nearly $4 a half gallon now. And Weight Watchers ice cream bars run about $5 for 4 small cups of ice cream. I recently bought a box of chicken bouillon packets (the low sodium ones), six packets for $2.50. Highway robbery.

I was cold a minute ago, but now I'm all steamed up.

I'll have to check the price of peanut butter when I go to the grocery store but it looks like a reasonable price.

Enjoy that peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

Or do you like it with honey?

Or bananas?

:)

P.S. I love putting peanut butter in sauces - now you can cook pad thai and african chicken soup!

Just plain, simple peanut butter on fresh-baked bread -- and I drink my Scotch neat and coffee black. That kind of a person.

Would you mind sharing the recipe for African chicken soup?

Most brands seem to be running at $2.40 for almost 500grams in my store. That's going to be equivalent at about $1.75 for the amount you got. Hmmm, a bit of a markup in that shipping expense. I wonder how much it would cost to mail you some?

Thanks for the offer. Fancy, exotic, imported delicacies are expensive. My mother-in-law from Milwaukee will be visiting this spring, though, and we'll send her a shopping list before she leaves.
