has placed among the Top Ten in the Anthology category of the annual Preditors and Editors poll. Wolfsongs contains stories of myths and legends about the wolf written by science fiction, fantasy, and horror authors. It includes my surprisingly cheerful story, "Werewolves of Chernobyl."

"Werewolves of Chernobyl."


What a Title? Congratulations.

Apparently, Chernobyl means WORMWOOD. Is that so?

"Chernobyl" is the Russian name for Artemesia vulgaris, or mugwort. Wormwood is Artemisia absinthium, which is called "polyn," and which is what they make the absinthe liquor from; it's legal here in Spain, and it tastes like very bitter anisette. The German name for wormwood is "wermuth" and French is "vermouth," which it also flavors. Both words mean wormwood.

Other species of Artemisia include sagebrush and tarragon.

By the way, according to ancient Greek historians, werewolves are native to the Chernobyl area.
