Forest Ackerman, the first science fiction fanatic
He was director of the magazine 'Famous Monsters of Filmland'
With that headline, El País, the leading newspaper of Spain, marked the passing of Forrest Ackerman in today's edition — 18 column-inches plus a big color photo. The article opens:
"Frikis (freakies) are in fashion: the fans, those obsessed with the world of comics, terror and science fiction. But of all of them, Forrest J. Ackerman was the first and the biggest of the fanatics. ...
"Ackerman was ahead of his time with the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, published in black and white on cheap paper full of poorly reproduced photographs and where he himself, under any one of his pseudonyms, wrote all the articles. What sounds like a disastrous combination, nonetheless, attracted numerous readers and created a new generation of authors and producers capable of changing cultural tastes and earning respect for what had been considered a minor genre and in many cases dismissed as mere monster movies. ...
It ends:
"...news of his fragile state of health flooded his house with letters wishing a rapid recovery to their model and idol."
He will be missed. Worldwide.
