"The Giants of Galtares," published in Beneath Ceaseless Skies

Fan fiction is as old as literature. Throughout the centuries, the Spanish medieval masterpiece, Amadis of Gaul has inspired hundreds of sequels and spinoff works — and the novel itself was a spinoff from tales about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

I have continued that tradition and written “The Giants of Galtares.”

In Chapters 11 and 12 of the novel, Amadis’s brother Galaor travels to Galtares to do battle with the giant who has taken those lands from Galaor’s step-father. He is accompanied by two damsels he meets along the way.

This is the story of one of the damsels who witnesses Galaor’s combat — and who faces her own life-changing test of courage. You can read “The Giants of Galtares” in issue #111 of Beneath Ceaseless Skies, an online magazine of literary adventure fantasy:

I just saw it, saw the author line and thought, "heeeeyyy... I know who she is!" The teaser has me quite intrigued; looking forward to reading!

I liked it very much! I especially liked the occasions when, although the words she spoke were formalities, Sardamira felt the feelings sincerely--I liked that for how it shows, precisely, what those formal statements are meant to capture. I loved how her feelings about Gandalaz the giant changed, and I loved the scene where she gave the her crucifix to the serving girl.

Thank you! A little of the dialogue actually came from the original book, and the rest was based on how people tended to speak and act back then, with more formality and ritual even in daily life. Those were different times. Mostly, though, I tried to write a story about how Sardamira changed. I'm glad you liked it.
